Subterranean Dissonance Fest
Malevich formed in Atlanta in 2016. Originally the band was made up of Sasha Schilbrack-Cole (drums/vocals/art), Joshua McIntyre (guitar), Daniel Desimone (bass/vocals), and Will Turner (vocals). They quickly released their first album, Only the Flies, and immediately began touring. In 2017, Will left the band to pursue a PhD and was replaced by Connor Ray, who first appeared as a vocalist for their 2018 7” split with Iron Gag. In 2019, the band released their second full-length, Our Hollow, recorded with Kevin Bernsten at Developing Nations Audio, with Connor picking up second guitar in addition to vocals. This release represented a more complex and cohesive sound for the band pulling from dissonant black metal, sludge, and post-hardcore. The band took the next few years to expand on this sonic palette, introducing wider experimentation in both instrumentation and composition inspired by an appreciation of slowcore, and ambient artists like Tim Hecker. This experimentation resulted in their newest EP, Trembling and Dowsed, which showcases the band juxtaposing aggression and intensity alongside patience and atmosphere. These songs were composed and recorded entirely at Connor’s home studio in Atlanta, Sobek Sound. Lyrically this release continues the band’s focus on the intersection between existential dread and the oppressive systems under capitalism.
Trembling & Dowsed was a project born of us challenging ourselves to step into new sonic territory. We wanted to write a set of songs that would allow us space to play with tape loops, electronic textures, and a wider range of instrumentation. It was also the first release of ours that Connor recorded at his studio in Atlanta, Sobek Sound. That control gave us the power to construct songs in the studio, refine our songwriting, and experiment in ways which we had never been able to before.
